Dog Walks in Chew Valley

Chew Valley is brilliant dog-walking country. Footpaths wind through farmland and woodland, the lake has a dedicated lakeside trail, and many of the local pubs will hand your dog a treat before you’ve even sat down.

Here’s a round-up of the walks locals reach for most.

Chew Valley Lake Trail

The 2.7km all-weather trail runs along the north side of the lake, linking Woodford Lodge with the two eastern picnic areas. The surface is flat and firm — good for muddy paws and muddy boots alike. Dogs need to stay on leads near the bird hides, so bring a lead even if your dog is usually reliable off it.

Parking: Bristol Water car parks on the north shore (small charge applies).

Folly Farm Nature Reserve

Folly Farm is a 250-acre Avon Wildlife Trust reserve with waymarked footpaths, ancient woodland, and wildflower meadows. The views across to the Mendips are worth the walk on their own. One note: dogs are not permitted on the reserve to protect ground-nesting birds, so this one is for human-only outings — worth knowing before you plan.

Litton Lakes

A gentle stroll around the lakes at Litton is one of the quieter options in the valley. The path is relatively flat and the scenery is lovely at any time of year. End at The Litton pub, which is dog-friendly and serves excellent food.

East Harptree Woods to Smitham Chimney

A pushchair and dog-friendly route through East Harptree Woods to the ruins of Smitham Chimney, a remnant of the area’s lead mining history. The Waldegrave Arms in East Harptree is close by and dog-friendly, with a garden for drying off after a damp walk.

River Chew footpath, Chew Magna to Pensford

Follow the River Chew downstream from Chew Magna through the meadows toward Pensford and the dramatic viaduct. The path is well-marked and mostly flat, passing through fields that feel properly rural even though Bristol is only eight miles away. Around 5km one way — retrace your steps or arrange a lift from Pensford.

Dog-friendly pubs along the way

Several local pubs go out of their way for dogs. The Blue Bowl Inn at West Harptree is known for dog treats and doggy ice cream. The Queens in Chew Magna is dog-friendly throughout. The Bear & Swan in Chew Magna welcomes dogs in its garden bar. The Ring O’Bells in Compton Martin has a large beer garden and is dog-friendly throughout.

Always check with pubs directly, as policies can change. Keep dogs on leads near livestock, the lake’s bird hides, and on any ground-nesting bird reserves.
